Welcome to ClimbingHabits!

The articles here are a resource for anyone wanting to improve as a rock climber. Whether you're unsure about how to progress, have a plan but struggle to stick with it, or feel frustrated with your progress, I'm here to tell you there's a way forward.

Improvement might be challenging, but with the right approach, it's much more likely—you just need to know where to look.

As a coach, I train, assess, and guide people in challenging environments across all disciplines of rock climbing and mountaineering, in both summer and winter, as well as inland kayaking, sea kayaking, canoeing, and mountain biking.

Over an eighteen-year career, I've helped hundreds of people improve by teaching them to view their performance through the lens of habits. I'm confident that by following my approach, you can achieve more than you ever imagined.

In short, these articles explore effective ways to improve and tackle the challenge of knowing what to do but struggling to do it.

There will be ten articles in total, each focusing on a topic and divided into two sections:

Knowledge: This section delves into the science and theory behind each topic, using relatable examples to make it clear and digestible. We'll work through short written tasks to build a bespoke habit map for reaching your chosen destination. I recommend getting a dedicated journal for this.

Skills: Here, we'll explore how to apply your new knowledge. I'll provide a list of skills and practice methods to convert your knowledge into action. You'll combine these with your habit map to create a step-by-step approach to reaching your chosen destination.

This approach has been informed by my personal experiences. My journey has been complex, requiring considerable change and many reinventions. I'll share my experiences and insights throughout the series as examples of how understanding habit formation can improve performance.

I've also been influenced by countless books, papers, discussions, and interactions with coaches, colleagues, students, and partners.

With this in mind, I'll create links to all the source material and credit those who've influenced my thinking. This will enable you to trace the concepts and theories back to their origins and draw your own conclusions. You'll find these on the Resources or About Me pages.

I encourage you to make this information your own but always acknowledge those who came before you, as their efforts deserve recognition.
