What you will need

  1. Something to record your measurements with: a phone or pen and paper should do.

  2. A measuring tape, dress makers tape or a ruler with a millimetre scale. (make sure your ruler takes its measurement from the end as many do not.)

  3. Two normal tins of beans or similar.

  4. A flat door, wall or kitchen cabinet that runs uninterrupted to the floor so you can place your foot against it. (no skirting)

  5. Solid flooring (no carpet).

The Method - Toe box shape

First, we want to know the shape of your toe box, specifically which toes are the longest. There are eight options below to choose from; just pick the one that is closest to your shape.

If both your feet are let’s say the ( H ) shape, then record it like this: ( Both - H )

If your feet have very different shapes, then you can record the feet separately like this: (Left - H, Right - E )

If your feet are nothing like any of the options above ( consult a doctor!, Joke.) You can simply put them in order of length. To help with this, we will give them all numbers as shown below.

Now, simply put the numbers in order of length, for example, if your third toe is the longest, followed by your second, then first, fourth and fifth then you would write ( 3-2-1-4-5 )

The method - Measurement

Did you know that the difference between each EU shoe size is only 4 millimetres?

We thought long and hard to come up with a method for measuring their feet that everyone can do at home, utilising things most people have in their cupboards.

We have tried ALL the foot measuring apps and to be honest they are wildly inconsistent, with almost all of them just using a rough street shoe size to measure your feet.

We want accuracy and consistency.

It’s for this reason that we ask you to only use our method and to be fussy! You will only need to do this once, so let’s get it perfect!

Our hope is that the foot scanner we are trialing will be within 1mm of the manual measurements you’re about to do (it has been even closer on many of our trials). If it’s consistent then we will build it into the app and this will all become much quicker.

Let’s get started.

We are going to take four measurements on each foot.

  1. Foot length

  2. Foot width (at widest point)

  3. Heal width

  4. Arch/instep length

Place your longest toe against a door or wall.

Make sure it is barly touching.

Place a tin against your heel so it’s barely touching.

Have all your weight on this foot. This will make your foot longer so take your time to adjust your foot position to ensure your toe is barely touching the door and your heel barely touching the tin.

Remove your foot without moving the tin. This is tricky but VERY important. If it moves restart.

Measure (in mm) from the door or wall to the closest part of the tin. Take your time to ensure your measurement is exact.

This is the closest point and in this example the measurement is 267mm.

Repeat the process for the widest part of your foot by placing the outside edge against the door or wall. Remember to fully weight it and ensure it’s barely touching both the door and tin.

Measure (in mm) from the door or wall to the closest part of the tin. Take your time to ensure your measurement is exact.

This is the closest point and is a measurement of 103mm.

Repeat the process with your heel using two tins—one on either side. Remember to fully weight your foot and ensure the tins are barely touching your heel. Take your time with this.

Remove your heel without moving the tins. This can be tricky so take your time. If either move restart.

Measure (in mm) between the tins at the closest point, take your time with this.

The measurement in this example is 61mm

Take a pen and mark the middle of the ball off your foot. Take your time to find the middle.

Place your heel against the the door or wall, so it is barely touching.

Measure from the door to the pen mark. Take your time with this. The measurement in this example is 98mm.

Repeat all the Measurements on your other foot.

If you feel like you have got the most accurate measurements, great!

Now you have your measurements you can complete the questionnaire by following the link below.

If you’d like to try the free scanning app, you can download it via the link below. You can then upload both your manual and foot scanner measurements to the questionnaire.

You will need to use a phone to download the software.
